Perhaps you’ve yet to hire a professional for your conference or congress.
As more events are under increased pressure to deliver a tangible Return on Investment (ROI) an experienced professional can make a substantial contribution to the positive outcome of your next event. Roy Sheppard has been described as “The cheapest insurance I have for my conferences” by Scott Harris, formerly ICSC (The International Council of Shopping Centers) New York.
In most cases he charges less than the chicken you will serve to your delegates!
1) Roy is a specialist conference moderator. He does this for a living – it isn’t something he just fits in around being on TV or radio. Roy is happy that he is not a celebrity. He takes responsibility for shining the spotlight on his clients. Its not about him.
2) Roy positions himself as the ‘conscience of the audience’. Audiences and participants appreciate this role. He asks what audience members want to know. He always makes his clients look good. He never disrespects or ridicules contributors or audience members. This is almost certainly one of the reasons he gets re-booked so often.
3) Roy has an amazing skill to soak up vast amounts of complicated information and make sense of it, often adding valuable insights to his highly experienced clients. He will shock you at his level of knowledge and understanding. In recent years he has moderated complex discussions such as 6 HOURS(!) with a panel of Professors of Orthopaedic surgery from research hospitals around Europe. He must have done a great job – he facilitated these Advisory boards for a number of years. He has worked with that client (Zimmer) for nearly 10 years. For Novartis Neuroscience he conducted an in-depth 90 minute panel discussion on the efficacy of a particular drug to an audience of 170 senior doctors from all around the world. He has moderated 3 day conferences for global dispute resolution lawyers – the ‘rottweilers’ of their profession. He is asked back again and again.
4) Roy has extensive experience working in a wide range of industries including; consultancy, construction, banking, retailing, government, healthcare, tobacco and many more.
5) Roy is particularly adept at helping clients’ clarify their objectives and question their assumptions in the lead up to events.
6) Many global conferences are attended by non-native English speakers. Roy is always sensitive to their needs. He has a knack of being able to identify potentially confusing elements of someone’s presentation and help re-phrase it to clarify the intended meaning. Feedback from such delegates confirms that Roy adds value in this way – he is also told that he speaks particularly clearly which improves comprehension.
7) Coaching executives to improve their personal impact on the platform and offering practical suggestions to improve their presentations.
8) Holding the event together and ensuring that there are no embarrassing silences is also something Roy is superb at handling. He always has relevant and insightful questions up his sleeve for open forum question and answer sessions.
9) Few conferences would not benefit from improving the opportunities for getting delegates to get to know each other better. Roy is an acknowledged expert on the subject of conference and business networking. Many of his clients book him to moderate their conferences and give his “Meet Greet & Prosper” keynote presentation. For 2 reasons; it's relevant to the audience and secondly – its FREE! Roy doesn’t charge extra for this keynote presentation. He’s there anyway. So you get a moderator and a keynote speaker for the same fee AND his fee includes 100 free copies of his bestselling book of the same title. Additional copies can be provided at a wholesale price.
10) One high profile TV celebrity who presents conferences, charges £16,000 PER DAY! No one can afford to brief him fully about the organisation, But he gets lots of work. Clients are not always aware that less-expensive, yet more valuable solutions are available. Roy charges £3,500 per day and £1,200 per pre-production day for corporate conferences. Trade association conferences and congresses are charged at a lower rate.
